Go-ahead for Pickering restart

26 November 2001

The announcement by the commission came after CNSC staff recommended that "blanket approval" be given for the restart of the station, subject to "identified improvements" being completed. The amended licence, which is valid until 30th June 2003, allows the plant to be restarted subject to improvements and upgrades being completed.

During public hearings in June, August and October this year, the commission considered evidence from a variety of sources including OPG, CNSC staff and intervenors. The CNSC concluded that OPG is qualified to operate the facility and that, once conditions have been met, there will be adequate provision made for the protection of the environment, public health and safety, as well as maintenance of national security and measures required to implement Canada's international obligations.
