GNS casks meet UK standards

17 March 2017

Radioactive Waste Management Ltd (RWM), the subsidiary of the UK Nuclear Decomissioning Authority (NDA) responsible for preparing disposal of intermediate and high level waste in the planned geological disposal facility (GDF), has issued a “final stage Letter of Compliance” for intermediate level waste resins packaged into 55 GNS MOSAIK casks in 2013 and 2014 at Sizewell B NPP.

The resins were packaged and dewatered by GNS using their waste treatment facilities FAFNIR and NEWA. They have been under scrutiny by RWM and the Office for Nuclear Regulation since final transfer to the on site interim store, GNS said.

After closing out a few remaining action points from the interim stage Letter of Compliance RWM recently issued the final document to GNS’s customer EDF Energy. This marks the successful completion of an eight-year-project which comprised the design and installation of new pipework within the station´s resin transfer system, modifications to the stations SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system and development of the safety case.
