German HEU returned

17 August 2004

As part of the US government's global threat reduction initiative (GTRI), a shipment of HEU from three German research reactors has been returned to the USA.

The move, completed on 5 August, was the first in the initiative and contained 126 spent fuel assemblies composed of both high- and low-enriched uranium. It was undertaken as part of the pre-existing foreign research reactor spent nuclear fuel return programme, which was incorporated as a key element of the GTRI.

The materials are now in storage at the Savannah River site.
