Gas-fired plant plan for Chernobyl

30 November 1998

Ukraine is to build a new gas-fired power station with a capacity of 3000-6000 MWe in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

The zone admministration said the new power station would not only boost the country’s power grid, but provide work in the closed zone, helping support the social infrastructure in Slavutich as well as implementing the Shelter facility projects, of particular importance following the winding up of the State Chernobyl Fund last year. The new plant will be a private joint-stock company and will seek to attract funds to finance construction without relying on the state. Gazprom is a possible investor.
