Funding for decommissioning

3 November 2002

Additional European Union (EU) funding for decommissioning Lithuania's Ignalina plant and Slovakia's Bohunice V1 plant has been pledged by an EU heads of government meeting in Brussels. This council promised that between 2004 and 2006, the EU would give the Lithuanian government E70 million annually for the job. Government leaders also concluded that payments will have to continue beyond that date, as Ignalina 2 will close in 2009 and this decommissioning effort "represents for Lithuania an exceptional financial burden not commensurate with its size and economic strength." Regarding Bohunice V1, the Council agreed that E20 million should be given to Slovakia annually between 2004 and 2006.
