Fuel tax rate increased

3 August 2002

The Fukushima prefectural assembly unanimously voted in favour of a proposal to raise the local tax on nuclear fuel, paving the way for increasing the effective tax rate from 7% to 13.5%.

Tepco strongly opposes the tax increase, as it is the sole payer of the tax. Tepco runs ten reactors at two plants in the prefecture. Kenji Fushimi, a senior Tepco official in charge of plant location, said: "We are considering filing a lawsuit as one of our options."
