FPL's retirement package

1 February 2003

FPL Energy wants to reduce the size of its workforce at Seabrook by nearly 200 over the next year, and hopes that early retirement packages that have been offered will provide an incentive for some voluntary departures.

The plant employs 790 people, and offered the deal as a way of reducing the number down to 600 by November 2003. FPL expects compulsory redundancy to be necessary only as a last resort. The company hopes to reach its goal through a combination of early retirements, attrition, and possibly shifting some workers to its two other nuclear plants, St Lucie and Turkey Point.
