In November 2000, TVO had applied for a government "decision in principle" on whether to allow construction of a new nuclear unit. The site for the new reactor would either be at Eurajoki, near TVO's Olkiluoto plant, or near Fortum's Loviisa plant. Both municipalities have agreed to the plan.
A government decision on the new reactor is expected soon, which would then have to be ratified by parliament.
