First VLLW storage facility

1 October 2003

Andra, the French waste management agency, has opened its first very low-level radioactive waste storage facility.

Opened in mid-August near Troyes, Andra said the facility is a safe option for the storage and management of waste concrete and metals used in decommissioning of nuclear installations. Currently it is only accepting waste that does not require on-site treatment, but will be fully operational in 2004. It cost EUROS40 million, and is part of a long-term management contract between Andra and the French government.
