First Mülheim-Kärlich decommissioning permit

4 August 2004

On 16 July, the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz issued the first permit for the decommissioning of the Mülheim-Kärlich plant.

The 1200MWe PWR plant has been out of operation since September 1988 and operators RWE stated their intentions to decommission the plant in 2000. Mülheim-Kärlich's remaining production rights of 107.25TWh under Germany's nuclear phase-out agreement will be transfered to other plants.
