Fire at decommissioning plant

3 August 2003

An overheated incinerator caused a fire at the Tsuruga research reactor, which is being decommissioned. The incident caused no radiation release and no injuries. A local government spokesman said smoke emerging from the incinerator quickly cleared, and fire fighters did not need to turn on their hoses.

Officials were still investigating the cause, but a viewing window on an incinerator duct was broken, and wind may have stirred up ash inside the burning chamber, causing the smoke and setting off the alarm. However, some workers inside the compound have reported hearing an explosion.
