Enusa recontracted to supply fuel to Spain’s NPPs

11 May 2021

Spain’s state-run Enusa Industrias Avanzadas said on 10 May that it has been awarded a contract extension to supply 12 reload batches of fuel and associated services by the operators of Spain's five Westinghouse-design pressurised water reactors as well as engineering and other services. Under the contract, Enusa will supply four reload batches to units 1 & 2 of the Asco NPP, three batches to units 1 & 2 of the Almaraz NPP, and five batches to the Vandellos II NPP. Power utilities Endesa, Iberdrola and Naturgy all have shares in the ownership of the five units.

This is an extension of the October 2018 contract Enusa signed with the three companies – the largest in its history- to supply nuclear fuel, the design of the core and the licensing of the corresponding operating cycles for the refuelling, as well as other engineering services associated with fuel, including tools for monitoring the operation.

The extension contract also includes the management of irradiated fuel during refuelling outages, in addition to its transfer and subsequent management. Enusa has had a licence agreement with Westinghouse since 1974, to supply fuel to these five reactors.
