EC release nuclear consumer goods safety report

The European Commission has released guidance to national nuclear regulators on how they should protect the public against unexpected contamination from consumer goods using radioactive material, while following the Euratom 1996 radiation protection basic safety standards directive. Products covered include smoke detectors, lamp starters, valves, surge voltage protectors, metal vapour lamps and others. “The variety of consumer products containing radioactive substances have increased considerably”, said the Commission.
