EC presses for action on underground waste storage

29 September 2008

A European Commission (EC) report on managing radioactive waste and spent fuel has called for action on underground storage of these materials, because “many scientific and technical areas important to geological disposal have reached maturity level.” Brussels added: “Postponements of…decision taking…are not acceptable because of the potential consequences of radioactive waste and spent fuel management on health and safety, as well as of the European citizens’ opinion.” It said all initiatives encouraging progress towards identifying and operating safe waste repositories are “highly welcome.”
