DOE awards nuclear waste management contracts

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the award of two fixed-price unit rate indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contracts for the permanent disposal of low-level waste (LLW) and mixed-low level waste (MLLW) to EnergySolutions and Waste Control Specialists.

It said that the contracts would allow DOE sites to place "timely, competitive and cost-effective" task orders for the permanent disposal of various types of radioactive waste.

Waste covered under the contract includes: Class A, B and C LLW and MLLW; 11e(2) byproduct material; Technology Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (TENORM) and Certain Sealed sources.

The material to be disposed of under the contracts originates from DOE facilities or is derived from DOE clean-up and remediation.
