Decree paves way for SNF imports

3 September 2003

A decree was signed on 11 July by Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov setting the conditions and procedure for the import of spent nuclear fuel into the country. It is the first step towards implementing the June 2001 law that allowed the Ministry of Atomic Energy to initiate a foreign spent fuel storage and reprocessing business.

The decree was also necessary to conclude an agreement with Iran setting conditions for export and return of Russian fuel for the Bushehr nuclear plant.
