De Palacio defends Euratom

26 July 2004

Pro-nuclear European Union (EU) energy commissioner Loyola de Palacio has underlined her commitment to securing an extension to the EU’s Euratom responsibilities and legislation on the security of plants and radioactive waste.

Speaking at a meeting of European parliamentarians on nuclear energy, she said: “Don’t forget, nuclear energy is also, along with gas, a bridge to the energies of the future, such as hydrogen.” She stressed that the recent enlargement of the EU and the oncoming admission of Romania and Bulgaria meant Euratom safety programmes were increasingly important. There were similar concerns regarding the need for the closure of reactors in third countries, such as Russia, she added.
