Crane modified for Trawsfynydd decommissioning

30 September 1998

UK Crane Service is refurbishing and modifying a five ton overhead crane, for remote handling waste drums at the Trawsfynydd Magnox power station in Snowdonia, Wales.

Decommissioning began in 1993. Drums containing intermediate level waste are to be placed in a central store.

The crane is operated from the control room. Encoders fitted to each crane motion are programmed to indicate the position of drums in the ILW store and the final location of each drum is controlled using closed circuit television.
