Consortium for Ignalina decommissioning

3 April 2002

A contract to establish and operate the Project Management Unit (PMU) at Lithuania's Ignalina plant has been won by a consortium of European partners. NNC (UK), Belgatom (Belgium) and SwedPower International (Sweden), together with their subcontractor STEAG (Germany) will jointly staff the PMU alongside Ignalina plant personnel.

The £8 million ($11 million) contract is to project manage the preparation for decommissioning the two RBMK 1500 reactors. The project will support planning and engineering of the decommissioning process. In addition, it will oversee implementation of pre-decommissioning facilities to manage and store operational radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, replacement of the heat and steam plant, and upgrading the plant's technical archive.
