China celebrates start of Fangchenggang construction

Towards the end of July, construction began on the first unit of Fangchenggang nuclear power plant in China’s southern province of Guangxi.

According to China Guangdong Power Nuclear Group (CGNPG), which is building the plant in a joint venture with Guangxi Investment Group Co., Ltd (Guangxi Nuclear Power Co), the project investment will be some 26 billion yuan ($3.8 billion) and the equipment localization rate is expected to reach 87%.

Construction is expected to take 56 months with the first units to be put in operation in 2015.

Relevant ministries, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Fangchenggang City, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, Guangxi Investment Group and others attended the groundbreaking ceremony on 30 July.
