Chernobyl underfinanced

1 February 2003

Work to maintain safety at Chernobyl during the first 10 months of 2002 received only 66% of the necessary finance, or $23.7 million of the planned $35.9 million. Some $43.4 million had been promised from the budget. The proportion went down to 63% for the first 11 months. So far, unit 1 has been 50% defuelled, and unit 2 is completely defuelled. Work is underway to remove fuel from unit 3. A storage facility for waste nuclear fuel (run by Framatome ANP and Ukrenergobud) is still being built. Preparations are underway for the construction of an industrial complex for processing solid waste fuel.
