Canatom and NPM merger

27 August 1998

Canatom and NPM Nuclear Project Managers Inc have merged to form a new company called Canatom NPM Inc. The aim is to create a stronger Canadian presence in the international market for nuclear power plant construction and services.

The two companies have been working exclusively in the nuclear power field for more than 30 years, often worked on the same projects. Canatom has participated in the construction of virtually all the non-Ontario Hydro CANDU plants in Canada and around the world. NPM provides project management, construction management and commissioning assistance of nuclear projects as well as procuring nuclear equipment.

Canatom NPM will build on a strong working relationship with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). They are presently engaged in projects in Canada, China, South Korea, Romania and the Ukraine.

Rene E Godin, President and CEO of the new concern, said that “Canatom NPM and AECL ... are working together at the present time to obtain projects and services contracts in Turkey, Romania and Ukraine, as well as pursuing opportunities in Hungary and Russia, and other identified projects.” Canatom NPM will have 250 employees with international offices in Korea and Haiyan, China. Its shareholders are AGRA Inc (38%), BFC Construction Corporation (24%) and SNC-Lavalin Group (38%). H W Pearson of AGRA is appointed Chairman of the Board.
