Canada and USA to shut down Russian breeder reactor

1 April 2005

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been agreed that will see Canada contribute C$9 million ($7 million) to the US Department of Energy’s Elimination of Weapons-Grade Plutonium Production (EWGPP) programme.

The goal of the EWGPP programme is to permanently shut down three Russian plutonium production nuclear reactors and replace them with thermal energy. The money will be used for the permanent closure of one of the three reactors.
