Bush to propose nuclear power incentives

28 February 2001

Federal grants for utilities that improve the efficiency of their nuclear reactors and a 10-year extension of the Price-Anderson nuclear insurance law are among the ideas for helping the US nuclear power programme contained in a draft comprehensive energy bill being prepared by the Bush administration.

The proposed 250-page National Energy Security Act of 2001 is currently circulating in draft form among agencies in Washington. The bill will be among the first pieces of legislation offered by the new administration and was die to be introduced before the end of February by Senator Frank Murkowski.

The bill was originally due to be introduced in the first week of February but was delayed to incorporate comments received on a draft circulated in Washington.
