Bruce Power chooses Whitemud site

31 March 2009

Bruce Power Alberta has selected the Whitemud site, approximately 30 km north of Peace River, as the preferred option for a potential nuclear power plant in Alberta. The Whitemud river is in the Peace River oil sands area.

Following a detailed technical review over the last six months, the Whitemud site scored higher than another parcel of land adjacent to Lac Cardinal in an analysis of 41 site evaluation criteria, including proximity to the Peace River, although both locations were deemed viable options.

Bruce Power Alberta will gather further baseline data on the technical, environmental and social aspects of the Whitemud site and advance the planning and consultation process while awaiting the report of an expert panel appointed by the provincial government looking at nuclear energy and the role it could play in Alberta.

Following this detailed site analysis and pending a favourable panel report, Bruce Power Alberta would be in a position to launch a formal Environmental Assessment (EA) in 2010. A successful EA would be a key piece of the decision-making process for Bruce Power Alberta as it considers new nuclear generation for Alberta.

Bruce Power has also announced it has signed a deal with local native American group, the Historic Saugeen Métis. Bruce Power said that through the deal, the HSM energy consultation committee, led by vice-president Archie Indoe, will ensure the Saugeen community has full and meaningful participation in the ongoing environmental assessment and regulatory process of the Bruce new build project.
