Bruce boost

11 May 2004

Unit 6 of Bruce Power’s Bruce B plant has been granted a 26MWe increase in power. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission ordered all units at both Bruce A and B to be derated to 90% design power after fears were voiced of a loss of coolant accident when new fuel was being loaded against the flow of coolant. The increase takes unit 6 to 93% of design power.

Modifications to unit 6’s core, including the lengthening of fuel bundles and the reduction of the number of elements in each from 13 to 12 have made refuelling against coolant flow possible. Work is planned to modify the cores of units 5, 7 and 8.
