Broadcast comms for industrial networks

30 May 2001

Eurotherm has added a networking device to its family of temperature and process controllers, which will connect them with industrial devices such as PLCs, drives, operator displays and process controllers without hard wiring.

DeviceNet is now a feature on all 2200, 2400, 2500, 2600 and 2700 Series controllers and indicators. Eurotherm says that the protocol is quicker to install than standard serial-based communication networks like Modbus, because it uses automated software configuration tools and simpler wiring layouts. It also allows connection with more complex devices and access to operating node variables such as process temperatures, alarm status and diagnostic status. The specification and protocol are fully open and a range of compatible control and instrumentation equipment is available.

DeviceNet is based on a broadcast-oriented system originally developed to replace expensive wiring harnesses in the automotive market. It is increasingly found in safety-critical applications.
