BNFL to assist RBMK upgrade

BNFL Environmental Services has signed a 30-month project management unit contract with the European Commission (EC) to assist the Leningrad plant to upgrade safety on units 3&4. The work includes changes to the reactor control and protection system, and modification to control rod systems.

BNFL has been working with the Leningrad plant (four RBMK-1000 units) since 1995 under the EC Tacis programme, carrying out general on-site assistance work such as upgrading of computer systems, fire protection, quality assurance and management training.
