BNFL sets up new company

3 April 2002

BNFL Japan KK has established a new company: BNFL Rokkasho KK. The announcement came during a February visit by BNFL Japan president David Powell to Aomori prefecture, where he met with the region's governor, Morio Kimura.

The Rokkasho Mura spent fuel reprocessing facility is currently under construction in the region. Seven British workers will be in Japan until commissioning is completed, probably in 2005. They will initially work with Hitachi, the manufacturer of the plant, providing support during the water-commissioning phase, followed by providing support for JNFL during the active commissioning stage.

A suit filed almost 13 years ago by citizens seeking a revocation of government approval for the plant was dismissed by the Aomori District Court last month.
