A BNFL team are the first group of Western businessmen to visit one of Russia’s most secret submarine bases in Kamchatka, also host to a submarine dismantling facilities. With 60 obsolete vessels waiting to be decommissioned, BNFL has been asked to help.

Richard Benbow, Senior Business Development Manager said: “Our experience in the North West of Russia has been recognised, in particular the fact that we have proved able to pull together funding from the EU, Norway and Sweden for a submarine storage facility at Mayak. At Kamchatka we witnessed submarines being dismantled in huge dry docks and we discussed ways of improving the solid and liquid waste management systems employed on the site.”
