Belene hangs on

21 October 2010

Bulgarian Energy Holding BEH has extended its contract with the Russian company Atomstroyexport for the construction of Belene NPP for six months. Validity of the new contract will expire on 31 March 2011.

On 31 October 2006, the Bulgarian National Electricity Company (NEK EAD, a subsidiary of BEH) officially announced Atomstroyexport won a tender for construction of the Belene nuclear power plant on the Russian draft of the NPP-92 with two power VVER-1000/V- 466.

The project has hit financial uncertainty since Germany-based utility RWE pulled out of its minority participation in 2009.
