Bechtel to replace steam generators at Beaver Valley 2

10 June 2013

Bechtel has won a contract to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for replacing three 370-ton steam generators at unit 2 of FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company's (FENOC) Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in Shippingport, Pennsylvania.

Engineering work on the project will begin "immediately" with full site mobilization in late 2016 and generator replacement in March 2017, Bechtel said.

The Beaver Valley 2, 904 MW pressurized water reactor first began operation in 1987. The steam generator replacement project forms part of a major upgrade programme launched by FENOC after it purchased the units at the end of the 1990s.

Bechtel said that in addition to work at the Beaver Valley, where it replaced three steam generators at unit 1 in 2006, it is also replacing steam generators at FENOC's Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Ohio.

The company has completed 34 steam generator replacements over the years, it said.
