Bataapati site ‘safe’

7 February 1999

Studies carried out by Radioaktiv Hulladekokat Kezelo Kozhasznu Tarsasag (HKKT), a Hungarian company specialising in radwaste, are claimed to demonstrate conclusively that the proposed Bataapati burial site, 150-200 m deep into granite, is suited to accommodating the nuclear wastes from Paks, including the material created by the decommission operation which is scheduled for 2010.

HKKT stated that six of the eight villages and settlements within a 5 km radius of the site in Tolna province have already set up participatory companies and are in full agreement with the scheme. They are to receive 5% of the sum earmarked for spending on the storage site annually, as well as improvements in the local infrastructure, increased taxes and more employment opportunities.
