AREVA picked to supply spent fuel pool instrumentation to US utilities

7 November 2013

AREVA has been awarded "a series of contracts" from US utilities for the delivery of more than thirty Spent Fuel Pool Level Instrumentation (SFPLI) systems. The systems meet the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission's post-Fukushima requirements for spent fuel pool monitoring.

One contract is for the supply of four VEGA through-air radar SFPLI systems to South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company, AREVA Inc. said 6 November. The deal also includes "development of engineering services for the installation of the systems," at the two-unit South Texas nuclear plant.

The VEGA through-air radar SFPLI system features two redundant, independent channels and an independent power supply. It has been proven in "more than 300,000 applications" including nuclear, military and industrial installations, AREVA said.

"Representatives from the South Texas Project participated in our product demonstrations of this technology and were able to see firsthand the reliability of this robust system even under adverse conditions," said Tom Franch, Sr. Vice President for Reactors and Services, AREVA Inc.

In April 2013, AREVA announced it had received a similar contract to provide Duke Energy with 20 VEGA Through-Air Radar SFPLI systems, as well as a system specifically for training. Duke Energy operates ten reactors in the USA. AREVA also won a contract in January 2013 to supply SFPLI systems to an un-named US plant.

AREVA and VEGA Americas, Inc. have delivered more than 30 of these economical SFPLI systems to US nuclear utilities, AREVA said, 6 November. Other vendors also offer similar systems.
