Adamov extradited back to Russia

4 January 2006

Former Russian atomic energy minister Yevgeny Adamov has been charged with fraud and abuse of office in Moscow after being extradited back to Russia from Switzerland.

Adamov has been the focus of a diplomatic row between the USA and Russia, which had been anxious that the former minister would reveal sensitive information to the USA were he to fall into their hands. However, Switzerland's Federal Court ruled that Adamov should be extradited to Russia rather than the USA.

Adamov, who was arrested in May on a US warrant which accused him of embezzling aid, will remain in custody.
