The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) has released a report recommending that South Korea and the US should strengthen cooperation in the nuclear power export market, which is currently dominated by Russia and China. This should include building a supply chain together.

In his latest update on the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said IAEA experts present at the plant had received information concerning evacuation of residents from the nearby plant operators’ town of Energodar. This comes in the context of reports in the Russian, Ukrainian and Western media of an expected major counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces focused on the Zaporozhye region.

South Korea urges resolution of dispute with US over nuclear exports

Korea has called on the USA to co-operate in resolving the legal dispute between Korea's Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Westinghouse over Korea’s planned reactor exports to the Czech Republic and other nations. Industry Ministry Lee Chang-yang made the request during a meeting with his US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in Washington on the sidelines of President Yoon Suk Yeol's state visit, according to Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy.

IAEA's Grossi visits Zaporizhia NPP

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Grossi has visited the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) at the head of a delegation of 11 people including three inspectors who arrived at the station to relieve the existing resident IAEA Support & Assistance Mission to Zaporizhia (ISAMZ) team at the plant. The delegation also included seven representatives of the UN Department of Safety & Security.

Grossi sees positive results from Iran trip

During a two day visit to Iran, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi held high level talks with Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Affairs Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and Vice-President of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami. The visit followed reports that particles of uranium enriched to 83.7% had been detected at Iran's underground Fordow plant when Iran had formally notified IAEA of enrichment only up to 60%. There was also an outstanding issue of uranium particles identified at three locations not normally subject to IAEA inspections.

Iran criticises IAEA for inaccurate report

Iran has criticised the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after the agency raised concerns over changes made to equipment at its Fordow uranium enrichment plant. The IAEA said in a confidential report, leaked to the press, that Iran had substantially modified an interconnection between two centrifuge clusters enriching uranium to up to 60% at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP), without first informing the agency.

Restart of Ringhals 4 delayed again

Restart of unit 4 of Sweden’s Ringhals NPP, closed for repairs to its reactor pressure vessel (RPV), has been further delayed. The damaged reactor was expected to restart in February but this has now been postponed to 19 March. The 1300 MWe pressurised water reactor was stopped for annual routine maintenance in August, but was not able to restart after RPV was damaged during tests. Vattenfall had initially expected the repairs to be completed by November. However, the restart date was pushed back to January and then to 24 February.

Zaporizhzhia NPP to remain under Russian ownership

The Zaporizhzhia NPP (ZNPP) in southern Ukraine is under Russian control and will remain so, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on 28 November. He was responding to a statement by Petro Kotin, head of Ukrainian nuclear utility Energoatom, who told TSN in an interview, "There are some signs showing that they [Russian troops] might be going to leave the Zaporizhzhia NPP. First of all, there have been a lot of publications in the Russian press saying that the Zaporizhzhia NPP could be left and handed over to the IAEA's control." However he also noted that there were currently no signs of the Russians leaving the plant. His comment, however, were widely reported in the Ukrainian and Western press. Also, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak had said the previous day that he had no doubt Russian forces would leave the plant. "The defence line is starting to retreat to the borders of the Russian Federation," he told Ukrainian television, adding that Ukraine would take the plant back.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi was in the United States from 26-28 October to attend the IAEA’s International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century in Washington DC. During his visit, he also briefed the United Nations Security Council in New York on what he described as the “extremely fragile and dangerous” nuclear safety and security situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The ZNPP site has been controlled by Russian forces since March. Until recently, operational decisions were taken by its Ukraine staff, but Russia has announced it has taken control of the facility and is now taking those decisions. In recent months the site has been beset with power outages caused by shelling, putting nuclear safety and security at the plant at risk.

External power has been restored to Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), a few hours after its connection to the grid was cut for a second time in less than a week, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said.

Future of Belgium’s Doel 3 still unclear

Belgium’s Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) may consider postponing the closure of Doel NPP unit 3, according to Belgian press reports. On 14 September, it was reported that the Doel 3 would be permanently closed for decommissioning on 23 September. However, the issue has been topic of debate within the federal government in view of the growing European energy crisis.

Turkish construction company reinstated at Akkuyu NPP

IAEA team begins inspection of Zaporizhzhia NPP; Grossi leaves after a few hours

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 14-member Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhia (ISAMZ) team of experts arrived at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia NPP on the morning of 1 September after being delayed for several hours by shelling near the site. The IAEA said on Twitter that the team had arrived at the plant “to conduct indispensable nuclear safety and security and safeguards activities”. Reuters said its reporter saw the team arrive in a large convoy with a heavy presence of Russian soldiers nearby. Russia and Ukraine accused each other of trying to sabotage the team’s visit to the NPP, which is controlled by Russian forces but operated by Ukrainian staff.

Uganda Atomic Energy Council denies selection of site for NPP

The CEO and Secretary of Uganda’s Atomic Energy Council (AEC), Noah Deogratias Luwalira, said on 21 May that media reports indicating that Mpoma in Mukono District had been chosen as the site of Uganda’s first NPP. Uganda has not selected a site for the proposed plant, he stressed, adding that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has not yet identified a site.
